Inclusive Swimming Competition-Beyond Handicaps (ISC-Beyond Handicaps) Project, co-funded by the European Union, has officially started!!
ISC-Beyond Handicaps aims:
encourage sports clubs to bring together physically disabled and non-disabled kids in the pool, promoting active participation and social inclusion of physically disabled children through swimming activities alongside their non-disabled peers.
increase physical activity for both disabled and non-disabled children, creating an environment for mutual interaction.
ultimately, establish a new type of competition in the sports sector that pairs disabled and non-disabled children.
The Kick-Off Meeting of the project was carried out online in November 2023 with the participation of all partners. During the meeting project goals, aims, and project work plan were discussed in detail.
As project partners, we all are excited about ISC-Beyond Handicaps and have great synergy for the creation of a new type of competition in the sports sector by focusing on both physically disabled and non-disabled kids.

- Inclusive Swimming Competition-Beyond Handicaps” held in Greece with the support of Erasmus+ Sport, in partnership with Turkey , Greece , Italy , Bulgaria and Portugal , at the first meeting of our ISC-Beyond Handicaps Project we discussed, planned and implemented an important programme to promote diversity and inclusion in swimming. We got together with our project partners to push.
We started the meeting with a comprehensive analysis report prepared by the Lusophone University. This report guided us by identifying the messages and requirements of our programme for specific needs.
We joined brainstorming sessions to create programme content and addressed the details of the swimming event. We enriched our programme with innovative ideas that emerged during this process.
Together with our members, we conducted a capacity analysis workshop of our sports clubs. With this, we identified the necessary steps to successfully implement our programme by making the best use of our resources.
Now is the time to act and put our plans into action! Here are the next steps:
Each partner will take on important roles, from psychological and physical support to security management. The distribution of these tasks has been done thoroughly and the contribution of each partner will ensure the success of our programme.
In addition, we are working to create parallel activities and competitions that encourage friendship, teamwork and fun in the pool!
Together to break down barriers, promote inclusion and create new waves in the world of swimming. Keep following us on this exciting journey and stay tuned for announcements.
This project aims to integrate children with physical disabilities and non-disabilities into swimming activities and promote inclusion and unity in sport at all levels through comprehensive education, digital resources and local/international competitions.

- Inclusive Swimming Competition: Beyond Handicaps Successfully Holds 2nd Transnational Project Meeting in Lisbon
Lisbon, Portugal – October 22-24, 2024
The project consortium of the Inclusive Swimming Competition – Beyond Handicaps (ISC-Beyond Handicaps) convened in Lisbon, Portugal, to showcase the program developed by Lusofona University and the Portuguese Swimming Federation. This marked the second meeting of the Erasmus+ Sports Project, following the first transnational meeting in April 2024 in Athens, Greece.
ISC-Beyond Handicaps, an Erasmus+ Sports initiative co-funded by the EU, unites partners from Turkey, Italy, Portugal, Bulgaria, and Greece. The project aims to promote inclusive swimming by encouraging physically disabled and non-disabled children to participate together. By fostering social inclusion, increasing physical activity, and introducing a competitive format integrating both groups, the project pioneers a new approach to sports inclusivity.
During the first meeting in Athens, the consortium reviewed a comprehensive survey conducted with children, families, coaches, and sports clubs to identify the specific needs of an Inclusive Swimming Competition Program. In Lisbon, swimming coaches and project managers from the partner countries received specialized training covering:
- Physical impairment classification
- Teaching swimming and para-swimming: differences and similarities
- Safety and best practices in para-swimming training and events
- Implementation of the Inclusive Swimming Competition Program
The next phase of the project involves implementing the program at the local, national, and international levels. Sports clubs have begun defining their target groups, pairing children with and without disabilities to compete together under the inclusive competition framework.
